Seven-Day Retreat on Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva Festival
Uposatha Silo the Eight Precepts Observance & noble silence
Beeh Low See Temple organised the seven days retreat on the lunar sixth month to commemorate the birth of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva (Guan Yin) and promoting the great compassion of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva. On 15th July 2017 morning, the temple superintendent Venerable Xu Zhen was invited as the Upadhyacaryah preceptor monk to hold the ceremony of the Eight Precepts Observation after the morning session chanting and thereafter taking formal breakfast. In the evening, the temple invited the President of Singapore Buddhist Federation Most Venerable Guang Phing to give Dharma talk on how to practice diligent in chanting. Practice has always been the most important homework for a lay Buddhist. In
today's society Buddhism is needed to purify and cultivate our mind. When one's mind is distracted, cluttered and unstable, treatment of the mind can only be done via a system and this system, includes constraints of one's own behaviour, observance of the eight precepts and diligent in chanting, to cultivate our own character, sublimation of our mind and can be able to establish the role of purifying and elevating our spiritual world.
During the retreat, there are eight incense practice everyday, including morning and evening chanting service. For the next five days, we have invited Venerable Ming Xue to hold the Dharma talk on " Eight Realizations of the Great Beings". ." Through the understanding of Buddhism philosophy, realized the world is impermanence, nations are fragile, and the four elements are empty, depending only on causes and conditions. Venerable Ming Xue with his fluent eloquence and easy explanation had won a lot of praises and good comments from the devotees.
The resident venerable lead the devotees daily to practice period the eight precepts and reciting the names of the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, meditation and puja ceremony every noon. All participants attending this retreat need to fast for seven days; no food will be taken after the lunch. They are so concentrating and diligent in practicing that no liquid herb drinks were taken in the evening . This retreat was fine and solemn.
