One Globe One Love and One Hope
(Tracing the Footsteps of the Greatest Hero in Harmony)

It is an extreme pride for all Buddhists around the globe to have their leaders come united at the Global Buddhist Congregation event organized by Asoka Mission in India .  Being the birthplace of Buddhism , India remains a great inspiration in tracing the footsteps of our benevolent teacher, Sakyamuni Buddha. The Dharma taught by the Buddha has tremendously touched many lives on Earth through its universal message of non-violence, compassion and wisdom. His profound teachings continue to be relevant and, in reality, desperately needed during these difficult times (i.e. global crisis, moral degradation, and natural disasters)

I would like to sincerely express my gratitude to Ven. Lama Lobzang, whose tireless effort make us possible today to celebrate and honor 2600th year of Sambodhiprapti (Enlightenment of the Buddha). The year 2011 is very significant to all Dharma practitioners around the world because since the auspicious moment of Enlightenment, we have entered a turning point in the history of civilization. His compassion and wisdom inspire all of us to diligently and continuously serve our society so that all of us can achieve high quality of life and promote world peace.

To achieve peace in the era of globalization, we need a strong teamwork and the cooperation of everyone's resources. This event is very important for all of us to bring forward our ideas to improve communication and collaboration. Our hard work is very significant so as to let the next generation live without selfishness, fears and hatreds. These conditions, I believe, are very crucial factors in ensuring the growth of Buddhist spiritual development in each individual. Buddhist leaders are challenged to embrace the ever changing environment to operate efficiently and to find sustainable resources in promoting growth without being totally dependent on alms and donations. I would like to emphasize that Buddhist organizations must invest in good education, art and culture, and programs that empower people.  Caring for many is not only the actualization of Bodhisatvayana but also set a higher quality of Buddhist organizations which may become a good example for others.

The era of globalization impacts the social and political evolutions. Many examples include one-sidedness economic which will only bring the advantage to the haves, environmental crisis, social and cultural disintegration, hectic lifestyles, and privacy invasion. These factors will lead into instability and potentially affect inner and outer peace. The moral degradation has rendered us to establish the effort to promote Dharma more than ever. For such global problems are often so complex and difficult, and no man is omniscient.

On a broader issue, each Buddhist disciple must be able to be the change agent to fashion a peaceful future with our brothers and sisters from different religions and spiritual practices. Similar to the major world religions, Buddhism promotes peace. I quote a verse from the Dhammapada verse five that states:  “Hatred is never appeased by hatred in this world; by non-hatred alone is hatred appeased. This is an Eternal Law” In addition to that, the last chapter of the Dhammapada disapproves of prejudicial distinctions because of favorable born-attributes. This is a cultivation to purify one's heart and mind according to the Dharma. Regardless our differences in beliefs, cultural background, and race, we are citizens of planet Earth who can feel pain, are capable of sharing our love and have the same hope someday we can end sufferings.

Let us overcome selfishness, greed, hatred, jealousy for the prosperity of mankind so that a higher quality of life can be achieved.
